Expressing Movement Through Music and Meaning
Lyrical and contemporary dance connect technique with music and expression. These styles encourage dancers to move with intention, using control and awareness to communicate feeling through movement.
Rooted in ballet and jazz technique, lyrical dance draws inspiration from a song’s lyrics and emotion, emphasizing fluid, connected motion. Contemporary dance blends elements of ballet, jazz, modern, and lyrical styles, using freer movement to explore contrast, shape, and individuality.
At Forever Dance, lyrical and contemporary classes support expressive movement while maintaining strong technical foundations, helping dancers grow with confidence.
Prerequisites for Lyrical & Contemporary Classes
Dancers enrolled in lyrical or contemporary dance must also be enrolled in Ballet and Stretch classes. These prerequisites support proper alignment, strength, and flexibility, helping dancers move safely and confidently as choreography becomes more expressive and physically demanding.
What Your Dancer Will Learn in Class
Lyrical and contemporary dance classes focus on developing controlled, expressive movement. Dancers learn how technique supports musical interpretation and how intention shapes the way movement is performed.
Rather than rushing choreography, classes give dancers time to understand flow, transitions, and how expression is communicated through the body, supporting both technical growth and artistic confidence.
Through lyrical and contemporary dance training, dancers develop:
Musicality and emotional expression
Fluidity, control, and dynamic movement
Strength, flexibility, and body awareness
Confidence performing expressive choreography
An understanding of how movement choices convey meaning
Class Levels and Age Groups
Our lyrical and contemporary programs are designed to guide dancers as they grow. Clear age groupings and expectations help nurture both technical progress and personal expression in every class.
Junior Lyrical (Ages 7–10)
Junior classes introduce dancers to expressive movement through age-appropriate choreography. Dancers explore musicality, fluid movement, and basic storytelling while continuing to build strength, coordination, and confidence.
Intermediate Lyrical & Contemporary (Ages 11–13)
At the Intermediate level, dancers begin working with more detailed choreography that emphasizes movement quality, control, and emotional connection to the music. Classes support dancers as they develop greater awareness of how technique and expression work together.
Senior Lyrical & Contemporary (Ages 14–18)
Senior classes encourage dancers to explore individuality and expression more deeply. In Senior Contemporary, dancers experiment with abstract movement and focus on understanding the root of their movement choices, allowing choreography to become more personal, dynamic, and expressive.
Attire and Dress Code
Appropriate attire allows dancers to move freely while helping instructors clearly see alignment, control, and movement quality during class.
Dancers are expected to follow the studio dress code. General attire expectations for these classes include:
Comfortable, fitted dancewear
Bare feet, half soles, or lyrical footwear as required
Hair neatly secured away from the face
For full details on required attire and footwear by class, please review our studio dress code.
