Hip Hop Classes
Learning to Move With Rhythm and Groove
Hip hop dance is a broad collection of street dance styles performed primarily to hip hop music. It is grounded, rhythmic, and dynamic, encouraging dancers to move with confidence while responding closely to the music.
Hip hop is often characterized by bounces and rocks, with strong contrasts between sharp and relaxed movement. Dancers learn to shift weight, control timing, and use their whole body to express rhythm and style. Sub-genres of hip hop dance include popping, locking, breaking, house, and other street-based styles.
At Forever Dance, hip hop classes focus on helping dancers understand groove and timing, building comfort with foundational movement while staying closely connected to the music.
What Your Dancer Will Learn in Class
Hip hop dance classes focus on developing musicality, coordination, and controlled movement while allowing dancers to explore personal style. Classes emphasize safe movement, clear instruction, and steady progression as dancers learn how to connect movement directly to music.
Rather than rushing choreography, dancers are given time to become comfortable with foundational grooves and movement patterns. This approach helps dancers build confidence while developing strong habits that support long-term growth.
Through hip hop classes, dancers develop:
Musicality and rhythm awareness
Comfort with foundational grooves and timing
Coordination, control, and body awareness
A growing vocabulary of classic hip hop steps
Confidence moving with different musical styles
Class Levels and Age Groups
Our hip hop programs are designed to support dancers at different stages of development, with clear age groupings and expectations that encourage healthy movement and consistent progress.
Beginner Hip Hop (Ages 5–6)
Beginner hip hop classes introduce young dancers to basic grooves, very short combos, and simple movement patterns in a supportive setting. Classes focus on listening to the music, exploring rhythm, and becoming comfortable moving with intention while building coordination and focus.
Junior Hip Hop (Ages 7–10)
In Junior hip hop classes, dancers begin organizing movement more clearly by learning structured patterns and short combinations. Classes emphasize timing, musical awareness, and control, helping dancers understand how movement fits within the music.
Intermediate (Ages 11–13) and Senior Hip Hop (Ages 14–18)
At the Intermediate and Senior levels, hip hop classes place greater emphasis on musicality, movement quality, and consistency. Dancers refine foundational grooves, learn a wider range of classic hip hop steps, and expand their movement vocabulary while developing a stronger sense of personal style.
Attire and Dress Code
Appropriate attire allows dancers to move safely while helping instructors clearly see alignment, footwork, and technique during class.
Dancers are expected to follow the studio dress code. General attire expectations for these classes include:
Comfortable, fitted dancewear
Clean, non-marking indoor shoes suitable for hip hop
Hair neatly secured in a bun or high ponytail
For full details on required attire and footwear by class, please review our studio dress code.
Learning Groove and Control Through Hip Hop
Hip hop training at Forever Dance starts with understanding groove and timing. Dancers learn how bounces, rocks, and weight shifts shape movement and keep it connected to the music.
With clear instruction and an emphasis on musicality and control, Forever Dance helps dancers build confidence, expand their movement vocabulary, and continue progressing in hip hop with purpose.
